Creating Custom Panorama Flying Sites and 32K Sci-Fi Panorama
Sign up for the newsletter to get notifications of new updates and DLC releases. This newsletter describes a new flying site for SeligSIM 2024.5 and documentation on how to create your own panorama site for the simulator.
32K Sci-Fi Panorama
The 32K sci-fi panorama, first released for FS One in March 2023, is now available for SeligSIM 2024.5 as DLC #2. The viewpoint is positioned 62 ft (18.9 m) above the deck near the wall, providing an aerial perspective of the environment. For a sense of scale, the Ultimate TOC biplane in the screenshot below is 46% scale with a wingspan of 100 in (2.54 m).
The panorama uses an ultra high-resolution 32,768 x 16,384 pixel image. It is composed of 16 tiles at 8K resolution each (see below), which taken together make up the spherical panorama image that is rendered in the simulator. The complete file is 1.57 GB in its native TGA format, though it's delivered in a compressed format (dds) for downloading and loading in the simulator. The simulator handles this resolution by dynamically loading the visible portions during flight.
For those interested, here is a smaller sized version (1,920 x 960 pixels) of the actual equirectangular panorama image that is sliced into the 16 tiles and rendered as a 360-deg spherical panorama:

Creating Custom Panoramas
I've published documentation for creating custom panorama flying sites in SeligSIM. The guide at https://www.seligsim.com/manual/documentation.html covers the process, from preparing panoramic images to configuring and installing your custom flying site. The example in the documentation uses a skidpad panorama near Johannesburg, South Africa.

Downloadable User Manual
In addition to the extensive online User Manual for SeligSIM, I created a PDF version that can be downloaded here:
https://www.seligsim.com/manual/files/SeligSIM-UserManual.pdf
The updates to this PDF version will lag the online version which is updated regularly. Also, the online version includes specific instructions for setting up some controllers, such as the InterLink simulator controllers.
About Selig’s Newsletter
Subscribers to this newsletter will be among the first to know when new airplanes and new features are planned and released for SeligSIM (FS One). I will also discuss some of the finer details that go into RC flight simulation, share tips and techniques for flying, and touch on aerodynamics and flight dynamics now and then. In addition to the usual coverage, keep an eye out for occasional thoughts and ideas on other related topics in RC modeling.
Thank you for your continued support of SeligSIM. Happy flying!
